Orange Chocolate Chip Loaf

With citrus season upon us, I want to gift you my Orange Chocolate Chip Loaf! I wish I could whip this up and personally deliver it to your doorstep, but we’ll have to settle for the recipe (and a virtual hug).

As my love for and experience with baking grows, I am still a huge fan of quick breads. They are considered quick breads because they don’t contain yeast and therefore, don’t need hours to rise. The entire process (including clean up) can be done in an hour and 15 minutes, most of which is spent smelling the delicious aroma, waiting for the loaf to bake.

Before I dive in to the recipe, I want to tell you a quick story about the first time I made this bread.

It was nearly 2 years ago and we had just adopted Kygo a few weeks before. In case you missed those first few months, Kygo got in to EVERYTHING EDIBLE. We’re talking bags of bagels, tupperware, even Voodoo Doughnuts.

So, I made this bread, had a little slice, and wrapped the rest in foil for later. The next day, I was heading home from school, thinking…Ooh, I can’t wait to have a thick slice of that bread for a snack. I am sooo hungry!

I walked into the kitchen and found little, tiny foil pieces everywhere. No bread to be found! As I was still adjusting to dog mom life, it took me a second to realize what happened. I looked over at him and he stared back with the most pathetic, guilty eyes I had ever seen.

Not only was I so sad about not getting my desired slice, but I was also freaked out because he ate all that chocolate! He was completely fine and he’s lucky he’s cute. I quickly forgave him and made another loaf a few days later.

Moral of the story: don’t leave your orange chocolate chip loaf unattended, or your dog (or husband, roommates, kids, etc.) might steal it.

Orange Chocolate Chip Loaf

Makes 8-10 Servings

Prep time: 15 minutes     |     Cook time: 1 hour

  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, softened
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest*
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice*
  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 4 or 5 thin orange slices (optional)*

*Note: feel free to use whatever type of orange you prefer. I’ve made this with navel and blood oranges and both came out delicious. Experiment!


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a 9-inch x 5-inch bread pan by lightly coating with coconut oil. Set aside.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, cream together coconut sugar, coconut oil, and eggs using an electric mixer or some serious elbow grease.
  3. Add yogurt, vanilla extract, orange zest, and juice and mix until combined.
  4. In a separate, larger bowl, sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together and stir with a fork. Make a well in the center and pour in liquids. Slowly stir to incorporate until combined and mostly smooth. Gently fold in the chocolate chips. Be careful not to overmix the batter, as that will result in a dense, chewy loaf.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared bread pan and bake in the preheated oven for 55-60 minutes, until a knife or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If adding the optional orange slices on top, add those about 20 minutes into the bake.
  6. Carefully transfer loaf to a cooling rack and allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days.
